THE BEST POEM IN THE WORLD
(ideas by Hertford Junior School year 4 - inspired by Jon Seagrave's poem of the same name - we thought about hunting down the best poem in the world like a Tudor deer hunt to tie in with their Tudors learning journey - then performed it for the school) A rare and magical, mythical beast I’ve heard rumours that north, south, west and east The best poem in the world is rarely seen That you can only find clues about where it’s been I know someone who glimpsed its sparkling wings On a high library shelf with some other rare things She said the words wafted with each wing beat Whispering Latin, like a breeze through wheat I heard someone else tell a friend it had been Picked up on the side of the road by a stream And that half of the poem had been left on a tyre A few golden letters and words, some on fire. I don’t know if this tale is true, I’m not sure It’s just one story, I’ve heard plenty more. A rumour I heard says its tortoise-like shell Glistens in the moonlight, when a curious smell Like a candle, just snuffed, mixed with freshly-picked flowers Grows stronger as it lingers hour by hour And if you sit quiet and still as a bird You may catch it whispering feathery words No no! I’ve been told that it lived on a chair And that Julius Caesar was once seated there That its rain-dropping rhythm made him go insane That it teased him and played him like you’d play a game I heard that he never could capture it whole Had to make do with one or two words that he stole My brother’s best friend told me he’d heard it said That the best poem in the world had ended up dead! And baked in a pie for King Henry the VIII But I don’t believe it, I think it’s still safe A creature like that would never be trapped It can hide anywhere, it can always adapt! Yes I’ve heard that its papery, chamaeleon wings Are so camouflaged that often, even if it sings Its loudest lines right into your ear Though you’re looking right at it, it just won't appear! That you’ll detect only it’s oily trail Like rainbows in puddles, you are bound to fail To get very close, cos it’s so good at hiding And just when you try to write it down, it starts sliding. It’s nocturnal A tree A bush An idea It’s older than the dinosaurs It’ll fill you with fear It’s got eyes like an owl Like a dog Like a sheep I’ve been told that it runs through your dreams Whilst you sleep. No, no, no, in Fin’s room, down the side of his bed He says that he trapped it by the horns on its head But it stung him with a horrible bee-like sting Who’d have thought that a poem could be a dangerous thing! I’ve heard that it travels at lightning speed From mind to mind jumping, always wild and free But maybe you can catch it with the help of a dragon Or from a magical carpet bound for heaven Get your fishing rod out with ideas as bait Holed onto the line, and then sit still and wait. And you may feel it fluttering inside your heart Tender words tiptoeing, treading a path Making you feel that it is very close The best poem in the world The one you want most The one you want to read, to astonish them all The one you want to pen, the one you want to call I say never stop searching, maybe one day we’ll find The best poem in the world will be yours and mine. A rare and magical, mythical beast I’ve heard rumours that north, south, west and east The best poem in the world is rarely seen That you can only find clues about where it’s been. (Ideas by Cherry and Ash classes of Hertford Junior School) GENESIS Maisie, Mae, Celia, Varsha Once there was a piece of matter floating in space That was going to become a big mysterious case It began to shudder, it began to grow It was now the size of my big toe Now it was bigger it caught on fire That lifted, higher and higher The flames whirled and swirled Throwing out spheres, creating a world Then they all began to come together And it will stay like that for ever and ever Then one of these planets not too near Began to form animals, animals like deer Then the animals began to weave Into people like Adam and Eve And stars began to appear in the sky So everyone wondered if stars fly But not everything in thei universe is so great Iike black holes, they could destroy the human race As I told you about the stars that sparkle like jewels I wanted to tell you about the biggest of them all The sun, the red hot burning sun We fly around it til the universe is done Even if you think the Earth will always be great The earth, it is possible, could have a bad fate But let’s hope that won’t be for millions of years So the human race can go on without any tears. I'll mix you up a potion, The main ingredient is the sea! When I am working, I drink 3 pints of beer I guess that's why I think I'm creative And imaginative right here! I cork-up all the potions, all ready for the night I put the padlocks on them so they will not fight. Fizzy, whizzy bang bang! In my science lab Labelling the potions with lots of tiny tabs! Yeah! |
BANG!
Nancy, Ji-Hyun, Mae, Varsha, Esther Bang! The world came to a start With a bang and a clatter It formed a fiery heart There were swirls of fire and hazes of dust It had to go on to finish, it must What was before this? Let’s slow things right down… What was before this burning town? Was it aliens or a whole other world? It’s a big shame no-one was told There wasn’t a soul in this deserted land To see how long it took to form sand And water and grass and trees. From the past the stars began to twinkle in the sky They were brighter and brighter as the nights went by Shooting stars went zooming past And the older ones were just as fast And that’s how everything might of began The Earth, the Sun and more planets grand And people have wondered about this for millions of years Did the world really begin like this? Was it so fierce? BANG! Nancy’s Science Haiku Scientists drink tea Whilst working in their mad lab Making massive bangs Electricity Lights turn on and off Using electricity Dark light dark light click Energy by Reanna Everybody has energy Needs energy for pumping blood (baboom baboom baboom) Energy is eating pizza and Macdonalds (Mmmmmmmmm) Runners need extra (run run run) Getting energy is really delicious (yum yum yum) You need it to have lots of fun (Hooray!) Ant-i-Gravity by Katya and Sorrel I am the greatest antronaut I stand tall upon my planet “I shall travel to Earth “ I thought “But I will need to plan it! In a week I board my space ship 4,3,2,1, lift off We fly off with a Boom Boom Zip But I’m so scared I’ll get a cosmic cough! First we fly by to Neptune Skipping through the rings Oh my god it’s chilling I am scared of many things Suddenly our space ship travels through the system And we land with a crash on Jupiter Is he the Roman God of wisdom? The gravity’s so heavy, I can hardly move a metre We whizz down to Earth, Where nearly everything is the same But the people are enormous! One creature sized the same Looks just like my aunt! I am the first antronaut I plant my flag on Earth….oh, run, someone is coming! GOOD FOR YOU Misha and Yasmin Burgers, hot dogs and ice cream too We say no! And so should you! Well what should we eat, I have to know Otherwise you will be my foe Fruit and veg is good for you But what else? Give me a clue! A little meat keeps you healthy, yes, But make sure it’s lean and really the best Don’t eat too much or you’ll be bloated Like donuts that are sugar-coated Or Macdonald’s milkshakes, cold and thick Drink too much and you’ll be sick Vitamins, proteins and minerals are good Sugar, fat and starch, eat a little you should In the right amounts they’re not that bad Having too much makes your body sad So now we’ve told you, just take care Eat good stuff and be food-aware.
