KAY WALTON EVENTS
Jan 2016 - This year I am looking forward to running more sessions for the next two phases of my exciting Rap'n'Rhyme project. The first sessions start this week and over the next 4 weeks we will see over 40 young poets writing poetry on a science theme, then rehearsing them, ready to perform at the marvellous Science Festival's Bright Sparks Day at Hove Park Upper School on Saturday 13th February 2016. The second event will be held at the Jubilee Library at the end of the Brighton Festival in May. I am hoping to have a poetry picnic in Queens Park at the end of May as well, but this is not yet confirmed. Dec 2015 - Well, that was an amazing month! December 2015 will go down as one of the busiest and most creative months I've had in a long time! I am thrilled to say that the first ever Winter Wordfest was a glowing success! Over 40 young poets from 4 schools met me and local performer and inspirational wordsmith Paul Stones at the Jubilee Library on Sunday December 6th. In front of an audience of parents, teachers and library visitors, they performed the poems they had written in our afterschool sessions during the term. I was immensely proud of the energy and fun that they brought to their words, as well as the courage they all showed in getting up in front of so many people so share their wintery words. They also demonstrated fabulous camaraderie with each other, supporting each other both off and on the stage. I had some wonderful feedback from the young poets, teachers, parents and library staff and visitors which I will be posting in the testimonials section of this site shortly. My school, Hertford Junior School put on a brilliant Christmas show and the children all sang their hearts out. Our choir of year 5 and 6 children went to the Conference Centre to sing with over 1000 other children at the BHMS Christmas concert. It was glorious as always. This year I had the honour of working with the music service as a singing tutor, going round participating schools supporting the choir leaders and helping their choirs reach their potential. It was fabulous to feel that my singing skills could be put to good use in this way, although I am surprised it's taken me this long to put myself forwards for this kind of work! I loved it and got some great feedback from music teachers I worked with. Also during December I also wrote a jubilee song with the children and teachers of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School. Although I have written many, many songs with children and for schools before, this is the first time I have been commissioned to write for a specific occasion. The finished song will be learned by the children and performed as part of their jubilee celebrations in January 2016 and in the summer of 2016. I really enjoyed working with the children's ideas and am looking forward to hearing how the celebrations all go. As if that wasn't enough, also during December I was involved with Cathy Burckett-St.Laurent, Bee Creative Lab and Same Sky to create an interactive space that would help little children to participate in the joyous event that is Burning the Clocks. We filled 3 spaces in the Phoemix Gallery with lights, tents, objects and sounds for children to play with and enjoyed a wonderful day of experimenting and engaging with under 7s. Sept 2015 - I am thrilled to announce that I have been successful in securing funding from The Arts Council and the Ernest Cook Trust to expand Rap'n'Rhyme to two more schools this academic year, giving opportunities to more young poets to be inspired by words and by each other. We will be working with Carden Primary School, who we began working with last year, as well as St Luke's Primary and Patcham Junior School. We are kicking the year-long project off with a performance in each school by myself, the marvellous Michael Parker and the brilliant Justin Coe for National Poetry Day. This will be followed up with after school workshops in each school culminating in a Winter Wordfest Event at The Jubilee Library on Sunday December 6th, where 48 young poets will share their winter poetry with each other, invited families and the general public. There will be two more phases to this project, writing for the Science Festival and for the Brighton Fringe Festival. It's going to be an amazing year! Here's to the wonderful prospect of building a community of young poets in Brighton and Hove! June 2015 - Kay will be running a spontaneous samba session at the Hollingbury Dip for the Lucky Dip street festival. Last year was such good fun. Come along and give it a go! May 2015 - Kay worked with Rap'n'Rhymers from years 3, 4 and 5 at Hertford Junior school and Carden Primary School in collaboration with the Jubilee Library's project "Evolving in Conversation" to produce original poetry on the theme of flight and how individuals inspire us to fly higher. They made an exhibition that is on display in the children's section of the Jubilee Library, Brighton as well as a film of them reading their poetry which will be shown at the library for the month of June. I ran a morning of poetry and origami for the final event day of the project this Saturday and over 40 people participated in making poetic feathers and origami storks. April 2015 - Page'n'Stage (Kay Walton in collaboration with Michael Parker adventure poetry) run a wonderful collaborative half day workshop at Fairlight Primary School, Brighton exploring metaphor and simile in the creation of rap poems on a theme of South African oppression. February 13th 2015 - Hertford Junior School and Carden Primary School Rap'n'Rhyme young poets perform original science-based poetry at Brighton Science Festival's Bright Sparks Day, Hove Park Upper School. December 20th 2014 - In collaboration with Same Sky and Bee Creative Lab, I am creating a light installation in The Phoenix Gallery with images of kaleidoscope designs projected onto a white cardboard box city that will be constantly rearranged by the young visitors to the venue. October 9th 2014 - Belated celebration of World Poetry Day - Hertford Junior School's Rap'n'Rhyme club's young poets perform original poetry at Jubilee Library, Brighton. May 2nd 2014 - Fairlight Primary School, Brighton - Poetry activities on the theme of coast - yr 5. |
